You can do it!

As I walked away with my perfect latte from the best coffee joint in Melbourne, I looked down at my perfectly painted toes. I did them myself as part of my 'being more mindful of money'. Well done me.

I am not being entirely cheap, note I still get my latte but I refuse to pay for something I can do myself and better. I can do a perfectly fine pedicure. I cannot however make a latte.

I wonder if the economic crisis making us more responsible? Separate the word - "Response -ability". How is your ability to respond to the economic crisis?

I know of some who are continuing as if nothing has changed in the world. I admire their stubbornness, but I am liking thinking a little more about how to manage my money. Being more careful. Looking at my life and seeing what I need to spend on and what I don't. Yesterday I put two winter tops I like on lay-by. I could have bought them but I don't need them yet. I will wait till the weather turns and them pay for them in full. Why fork out the money to have them languish in a drawer for a few weeks?

I am trying to make my money count, so to speak. I refuse to melt together bits of old soap or reuse tin foil or give up my perfect latte, as I mentioned, but I am trusting myself to be a little more to be more present in my own life. Trust what I can do and do more of it.

Things I can do that I used not to do:

  • Blow dry my own hair
  • Paint my toe nails
  • Sew on my own buttons
  • Make my lunch
  • Clean my house
  • Vacuum my own car
  • Mow my own lawn

I like the new more self reliant me. "Princess" is so 2008. No more heiresses please. The less I see of Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and the Geldorf spawn the better. Show me the ones who work for it.

Kate, Go Girl!

I love the simplicity of doing. Don't get me wrong - I'd much prefer someone pampering my tired toes with a paraffin pedicure, but there is a stillness, a meditation in the act of doing and being in the moment.

BTW - just got your book & LOVE IT. The inspiring content is what I have been searching for my business, & the artwork is truly beautiful. I will treasure this as a favourite!

Here here on the book =) I love it. And another here here to your post. I am presently learning to be more fiscally responsible and look forward to getting back to my roots. Or showing them since I can't afford to get my hair done...lol

One way I've been trying to make my money count is through bartering, something I've done for years with the VIPs in my life - my hairdresser, bookkeeper and florist (& the occasional tradesperson). In exchange for a deep tissue, therapeutic massage, I get my roots done, my financials sorted and my weekly fresh flowers without breaking the bank! I'm looking for an IT expert & a whitegoods supplier with a sore back :-)
